Zomtober 2015/5: End of the Line

Not quite ready for his closeup

Officially, Zomtober 2015 ended last Sunday. That won't prevent one last bite of the apple.

In that spirit, here are some WIP shots of the Boss Red Ghoul, Reaper's Dreg Chieftain; a Paul Muller sculpt with some seriously crazy hair. That hair was key in showing that the clown ghoul theme could, nay should, be carried beyond FD's Perribos.

The washes are complete, establishing the shadows. For the flesh, the darkest of these went to the usual suspects (armpits, groin, and under the jaw). This guy also sports a goiter, pot-belly and man-boobs, all of which received similar treatment.

A fair amount still needs to be done to re-establish the midtones and highlights plus some detailing and the base.

There will be at least one more post featuring all five minis once they're all truly completed.

Thanks are due to Pulp Citizen of Eclectic Gentleman Tabletop Gamer, Simon Brummie Quinton of Brummie's Wargaming Blog and Rob Bresnen of Four Colour Super Minis, for organizing another successful Zomtober. Well done, one and all.

    1. Much appreciated, Michael.

The two Reaper minis are relatively new (released less than a year ago). The chieftain's a big boy (that's a 30mm base). Should synch up nicely in terms of size with Heresy's Ghoul King mini that you painted a while back.

  3. Wow!! Another terrific paint-job to another staggeringly well-sculpted mini. Where do you find these Finch? There's definitely an element of Spawn's Clown nemesis the Violator to this figure. What a stunning series of posts you've produced for Zomtober and I can't wait for the group shot. They all look ghoulishly great!!!

    1. Thank you so much, Simon.

If I spent half the time actually painting the minis I already own as I do trawling the internet for more stuff to buy, I'd be a much more productive painter. The project-planning/collecting aspect of the hobby is downright addictive. Not complaining, mind you. It's an enjoyable aspect, to be sure.

  6. Really beautiful work. Your use of washes is forcing me to reconsider my own technique -- I rarely use them for anything except special situations... but you are able to achieve such soft colours. It's an amazing style, and I wish I could come close to emulating it.

    1. Thank you, Mathew. The technique straight from its source: http://wappellious.blogspot.com/p/using-shaded-basecoat-technique-to.html

Learning to use washes in a controlled fashion really improved my results.

    2. Thanks for that link. What a fascinating article! It's gone right into my bookmarks. It's a totally different technique than I've ever used... I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

  7. Nothing like a pair of deflated man-boobs to scare you silly during Halloween period. :)
Lovely realistic work on Boss Red Ghoul.

    1. Thanks, Bob.

These are just WIP photos, mind you. The whole lot's finally done and the pictures have been taken. Now I need to put a final Zomtober/Zedvember post together.
