Bael the Corruptor

Breaking news... I finished a miniature; specifically Fractured Dimensions' Bael, a testament to Paul Muller's sculpting chops currently available from Mortal Arrow. Currently is the operative word here. More on that later.

Lots of red on this one. The fleshtone is Reaper Cinnamon Red highlighted with Reaper Buckskin Pale while the cloak features Vallejo Vermillion highlighted with Reaper Olive Skin Highlight.

GW washes (Crimson to Violet to Nightshade) were used to build up the shadows. The shading of the cloak with washes alone proved suboptimal (very streaky). Some Vallejo Dark Red and Black Red fixed things.

Lots of freehand on this one too.

Historical Bael (Baal) worship evidently featured a cross symbol and an association with bulls (the animal, not the basketball team). With this in mind an inverted cross/bulls-head combo seemed appropriate for the cloak.

I hadn't planed on much else in the freehand department but the mini seemed to need more so I poured it on. The scabbard even received some gemstones.

The creative team at Mortal Arrow provides a back-story for Bael including the fact that he had his tongue cut out and communicates using the severed heads of his enemies. Very cool.

Sadly, Ive learned that MA will only be selling FD minis through the end of the month (May '16). Where (and if) these minis will be available after that, I have no clue. (Well, MA's Facebook page provides a pretty big clue, but as I know nothing for sure I'll leave it at that.)

On the plus side, MA has some neat stuff of its own in the pipeline, including some fantastic giant snails by Pedro Navarro. The ever elusive flumph seems a lost cause but there may be a flail snail in my future.

PTS XIV: Regarding the Persistence of Memory or Complete Lack Thereof

After an extended pause, painting on Fractured Dimensions' Bael and associates has resumed. The post title refers to gaps in my recollection of exactly what colors had been used previously. (Note to self: In future... take notes.)

I eventually sorted things out and made some progress today.

Center Stage Miniatures and the Tome of Horrors Kickstarters... I & II. 

These words alone make my heart sink and my blood pressure soar. That's even before mention of former CSM top banana and paragon of virtue Matt Solarz.

Pacesetter Games has acquired the assets of CSM. Assuming resolution of outstanding IP issues this will include miniatures from TOH I & II. I learned of this a couple weeks ago and have been in a hobby funk ever since. Seems I really dislike being reminded of this fiasco and, more pointedly,  my own gullibility.

Should I be pleased at the prospect of finally getting some long sought after flumph miniatures (and other stuff)? Absolutely. 

Should I continue to stew over being so thoroughly hosed by the aforementioned Mr. Solarz? Absolutely not.  

Will I continue to stew over being so thoroughly hosed by the aforementioned Mr. Solarz? Hopefully not.

Bottom line #1: I may yet get my flumphs (and other stuff) if I'm willing to pay for them a second time (albeit at a substantial discount).

Bottom line #2: I should take Mother Goose's advice to heart and resign myself to things as they stand.

Additional observation: I need to get back to painting things.

PTS XIII: Blizzard of '16

The latest storm of the century has arrived, the Garden State is officially under a state of emergency, and, between shoveling, some painting might actually happen.

Bael and his lady-friend (or is that lady-fiend) have their colors blocked in and some of the highlighting done. The multiple-red color scheme seems to be coming together nicely while the outline for some freehand on Bael's cloak (a Bullhead glyph over an inverted cross) is in place.

Bottom line: limited progress since the last post. Now dear reader, If you'll excuse me, I should be off to the paint-cave.

PTS XII: Devil Build & Color Test

The devil miniatures from the last post are ready for paint. There was much prep work and a multitude of small parts involved with these bad boys (and girl).

Wyrd's Lelitu caused unwanted headaches when I drilled clear through the front of the upper left arm while pinning her together. Hopefully a little green-stuff has provided an adequate remedy.

Fractured Dimensions' Bael is intended to be the center of attention here but as he's scarcely larger than the other minis he seemed at risk of being lost in the crowd. A 30mm base and a lot of cork went into elevating him both literally and figuratively.

Red-devil skintone experiments are ongoing. Reaper's Cinnamon Red (a new color provided as a free sample with a recent order) seems an interesting starting point. The picture below shows possible midtone/highlight combos. Shading will be handled with washes.
